Art Studio-Famous Artist Edition: Explore the Studio

The West Hawaiʻi proudly hosted Art Studio: Famous Artist Edition, an engaging summer learning experience that immersed students in the lives and artistic styles of four world-renowned artists, Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, Henri Matisse, and Pablo Picasso. 

Throughout the four-week program, students explored each artist through close observation and interactive discussions (think-pair-share) of their works, literature, poetry, videos, and hands-on studio experiences. Acting as both Art Detectives and Young Artists, students analyzed famous masterpieces, expanded their academic vocabulary, and learned how artists use color, line, shape, texture, movement, and perspective to communicate ideas and emotions.

Each day, students participated in a variety of engaging activities including Quick Draw challenges, Museum Walks, Artist Talks, independent art exploration, and guided studio lessons. Students practiced artistic techniques unique to each featured artist while strengthening observation skills, creativity, perseverance, and confidence. They reflected on their learning through poems, written responses, and discussions using academic language, helping them make meaningful connections between art and their own experiences.

The culminating project allowed students to create original masterpieces inspired by each artist's techniques and artistic style.

The success of Art Studio: Famous Artist Edition was evident in the enthusiasm, imagination, and growth demonstrated by every student. Through authentic, project-based learning, students strengthened creative thinking, communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills while discovering that art is another powerful way to tell a story and express ideas.
